My girls wanted to be butterflies for Halloween this year, and I wanted to come up with a costume that could easily be re-used. I decided to make tutus, which added to black leotards and tights, wings, and antennae, make the perfect butterfly!
These are so adorable on little girls, and are NO SEW. They can easily be made in one evening–it took me a little over an hour to make one. They are adorable on infants, toddlers, and little girls–they work for any age.

ITEMS YOU NEED:

-tulle (Measure your child from their waist to as long as you want the skirt. You will need to double that for the length of strips, and then as much tulle as you want to make a full/less full skirt)
-1 inch elastic
-scissors

DIRECTIONS:

-Cut the tulle into 3-4 inch strips. You can make them thinner, but I like the way they look a little thicker. They need to be DOUBLE the length you want the skirt to be.
-Cut the elastic the width of your child’s waist, plus an inch or inch and a half.
-Using a needle and thread or machine, sew the ends of the elastic together, overlapping them just a little bit. Trim those ends if necessary.
-Taking your strips of tulle, tie them (using a knot) on to the elastic right at the middle of the strip, so there are two strands of tulle hanging down.
-Repeat all the way around the elastic. If you are using more than one color, decide ahead of time what you want the pattern to be. I used 4 yards of pink, and 1 yard of black per skirt, so I tied 4 strips of pink, then 1 of black.
-Embellish as desired, with ribbon, flowers, etc. Some fun color combinations are brown and pink, black and pink, 2-3 shades of pink, orange and black (fun for Halloween!), green and pink, or even rainbow colored.
