We have been working to finish a large room in our basement for about 7 months now, and hallelujah, it’s almost done. We still have to paint trim, put up baseboards, and finish the ceiling, but of course I have already started decorating. There is one larger wall that I needed to fill up, and my super talented friend gave me a great idea. She used actual wooden frames purchased from a craft store for hers, but I decided to change mine up a little bit, and make them out of MDF. That’s one of the greatest things about crafting…you can take a great idea and make it your own.
I love how it turned out, and it was just the right size for the space. Stay tuned for what will go underneath them…

-MDF, cut into desired size. Most large hardware/home improvement stores should do this for you. I made mine 18 inches square, because I wanted a large 3 inch border.
-spray paint
-12×12 piece of scrapbook paper, per board
-double stick tape
-wooden letters
-hot glue gun

1. Paint boards. Let dry, then sand edges as desired. Wipe dust off, and let dry.

2. Apply double stick tape to wrong side of scrapbook paper, and place directly in the center of your board. You could also easily use Mod Podge for this project–I decided not to for a couple of reasons, but mostly because the tape allows me to remove the paper easily from the board if I ever want to change the paper out. (For some crazy reason I like to change things around occasionally!)

3. Using the hot glue gun, apply hot glue to the back of the letter, then place squarely on the paper. Be VERY sure you have it where you want it before you put it down–you will not be able to remove it. Let dry completely.

You can make these any size you would like to, and to fit any space. Who doesn’t love a monogram? Think how adorable they would be over a child’s bed, or even on an easel in a family room or living room. Hmmmm. I might have to do that.

  1. This is just the inspiration I needed today – I've been planning a monogram project and now I know what I want to do. Thanks!!

  2. I had to google MDF (sorry, I'm a dork ; ) I love this and have the perfect wall in my basement for it. If I ever try it, I'll let you know how it turns out.

  3. Jewels—I used the brackets that you put on the back of pictures, the extra large ones to hold the weight.

  4. This is a wonderful idea! I think I would prefer the MDF because it creates more of a 3-D effect in my opinion.

If you do not mind, I would like to mention this post in my Posts of the Week post due out November 8th! :)
