This project was made out of desperation. We had another one hanging by the door, but it just wasn’t strong enough for the weight of keys, which resulted in the nails pulling out of the drywall and looking terrible.

We don’t have a lot of keys–just one set for each of us–so I thought “his” and “hers” would be perfect.

His & Hers Key Holder

ITEMS YOU NEED:

  • frame OR piece of wood
  • beadboard, cut to fit frame, or slightly smaller than wood piece
  • sheet metal, cut to fit desired space
  • 4 metal carpet tacks
  • subflooring adhesive or Gorilla Glue
  • old-fashioned nails
  • vinyl

DIRECTIONS:

I decided to use a frame, but you could definitely use a piece of wood (pine boards come in many different widths, and they can be cut to the length you want right there at the home improvement store) instead. You would just layer your pieces: painted board on the bottom, beadboard cut just a little smaller (depending on how much of a border you want), and the sheet metal smaller than that. A similar project would be my FHE board. Or, you could purchase/re-do a frame you love, and have the beadboard cut to fit right inside it. This is super easy, but definitely sturdy.

This is what I did:

1. Frame came first–made it to wall specifications.
2. Cut beadboard to fit inside frame.
3. Cut sheet metal to my desired proportions, leaving room at the bottom for the nails.
4. Using Gorilla Glue, glued the sheet metal in place, then let dry.
5. Tacked the corners down with metal carpet tacks. (You have to glue first–the tacks won’t keep the metal in place.)
5. Added nails to the bottom of the beadboard.
6. Applied vinyl.
7. Tied fabric on the nails for an extra touch.

And now you have a darling and functional key holder!

P.S. Don’t mind the pink walls in the background–it was a very rainy, dark day, and my girls’ room had the best light!

Have a great weekend!
