Our family will be holding our 2nd annual Haunted Gingerbread House Extravaganza this year, and we can’t wait!

The night we decorate gingerbread houses during the Christmas holiday is always much anticipated at our house, so last year, I decided to give something similar a try for Halloween–the spookiest time of the year!

My kids LOVED it. They were thrilled to do it all by themselves, and armed with graham crackers, a milk carton, frosting, and candy, they went to town. It was such a fun night, and we can’t wait to continue this new tradition. Inviting friends & family just increases the fun—and the amount of candy. :)

ITEMS YOU NEED:

  • milk cartons, emptied and rinsed out
  • graham crackers
  • frosting
  • candy galore!!

CANDY IDEAS:

  • mini marshmallows
  • M&Ms–plain and peanut
  • Chocolate Chex cereal–great for roofs
  • candy pumpkins
  • black licorice
  • jelly beans
  • candy corn
  • orange & black gumdrops
  • Reeses Pieces
  • Milk Duds
  • York Peppermint Patties
  • Junior Mints
  • Whoppers

Creating a haunted gingerbread village is also fun, using varying sizes of cartons. Half & half containers work well for taller buildings, while the tiny school-sized cartons are perfect for smaller homes & buildings.

  2. We are making these at Chase's playgroup today too. My friend makes them and uses the chocolate graham crackers but I never can find them! My kids also love the halloween peeps.

  3. Here is a little tip, melt white sugar in a sauce pan until it is melted. It will turn a golden to slightly brown color. Quickly dip the edges of the grahams in the syrup and hold together with the next side. It only takes a few seconds for it to dry. It really holds the houses together and the cartons are not necessarily necessary.

    I think I will try Halloween Haunted houses this year. What fun!

  5. This is a really good idea. We will be making our own soon. We always make "graham cracker houses" for Christmas but I never thought to make them for Halloween. Thanks!!

  6. Gingerbread houses for Halloween? Genious!!!! It almost makes more sense to make them at Halloween. How fun!
