{oh what do you do in the summertime} the girl who ate everything

Hi, I'm Christy from The Girl Who Ate Everything and I'm excited to be here today. Thanks Kierste!I'm The Girl Who Ate Everything which means I didn't earn my name from watching my calories and nibbling on a celery stick here and there. I've eaten my fair share of desserts and brownies, but LEMON brownies are totally intriguing and new to me. For some reason lemon flavored treats are a surprisingly polarizing topic on my site; people either love them or hate them. I happen to love them! These lemon brownies aren't just a little lemony. These are packed full of lemon flavor. They have a sweet lemon brownie base with a tart glaze on top. They kind of reminded me of … [Read more...]

{trifle in a jar…berries with lemon cream}

berry trifle in a jar brown paper packages title

Fresh berries are one of my absolute favorite things, and the epitome of summer. I think I adore blackberries the most, but I waver whenever I taste raspberries!   I love to serve berries after dinner, and mason jars is a really fun way to present them. When I'm feeling extra fancy, I make them into a trifle, using a quick and simple lemon cream.  It takes just minutes to make, but adds an incredible creaminess and a sweet complement to the tartness of the berries.  If you're looking for a yummy dessert to serve to family, friends, or other company, this is definitely one to try! This time I used raspberries and blueberries for the 4th of July, but any berry will work.  You could … [Read more...]

{clipboards + wipes cases = easy coloring kits for kids}

coloring kits for kids brown paper packages title

Our family will be getting on a plane this week and flying to our new home!  It will also be the first time that all seven of us will fly together, and with four little ones, I've been trying to think of different ways I can keep them all occupied for the trip. One of the things that I've always had in our church quiet bag is a clipboard or two.  I love them for kids, because they fit perfectly in their laps, give them a hard surface to write on, and keeps their paper or coloring page still and in one place. As I was brainstorming ideas, I realized that a clipboard for each of their backpacks would be perfect, and then I could stick them in our church bag after we arrived.  Next … [Read more...]

Easy Ruffled Flag Tees

flag tee brown paper packages 1

I wanted to make a fun tee for my girls to wear on the 4th of July, and I needed it to be quick and simple.  I just had a couple more days before my sewing machine would be packed away, and I didn't have a lot of time to work on it.  So, I grabbed two spools of ribbon, some thread, and grey tee shirts I found at Walmart for $3.  Less than 30 minutes later, I had two darling shirts, ready to celebrate in! Okay, no judging here.  Lol.  I am by no means a seamstress, and I know that there are plenty of you out there that are.  So, please don't look too close at my stitches---I'm just happy that they look pretty straight! Just know that if I can do this, you can … [Read more...]

{happy father’s day: extreme six-layer bars}

In honor of Father's Day, I'm sharing my hubby's favorite treat, and his request for today.  I call them {Extreme Six-Layer Bars}, because I took my regular recipe, double pretty much everything, but put them in the same size pan.  This means they turn out extra gooey and thick, chock full of chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and nuts.  The reason they're six-layer, and not the traditional seven?  No coconut at this house!  (You could always add it in if you like it...){Ingredients}2 c. graham cracker crumbs (it's good with crushed corn flakes, too)1/2 c. butter, melted2 cans sweetened condensed milk1 package chocolate chips1 package butterscotch chips1 c. chopped … [Read more...]

Stars & Stripes Bunting

flag bunting | simplykierste.com

Happy {Flag} Day!   This darling stars & stripes bunting is the perfect project to celebrate today, as well as the 4th of July.  It's super easy to do, and you can get it done in less than two hours--and that's mostly drying time! It would be so cute in a doorway, window, on a mantel or backyard fence, or as decoration behind your holiday table. I used the darker idaho potato colored burlap, and I {love} it.  The paint colors are Rustoleum's Navy Blue (Gloss) and Colonial Red (Satin). I really recommend that you use spray paint, as opposed to craft paint. Craft paint will soak through the burlap, saturating it much more than the lightness of spray paint. It also has more … [Read more...]

{vtech kids switch & go dinos: product review}

This post brought to you by VTechKids. All opinions are 100% mine......I was recently asked to review a new VtechKids product, or rather, my boys were.  :)  Just opening the box was exciting for them, but when they saw the Switch & Go Dinos  Silver, The T-Rex Dino and Horns, The Triceratops Dino, it was all over. My hubby literally could not get them out of their boxes fast enough, and my boys fell in love with them immediately.  They are actually clutching them in their beds right now, fast asleep!The  Switch & Go Dinos are the perfect combination, easily transforming from race car to roaring dinosaur. I wondered at first about my … [Read more...]

{mason jar drinking glass gift set}

mason jar gifts | simplykierste.com

Last week I was invited to a bridal shower for two sisters that are getting married a month apart this summer, and I wanted to come up with a really fun gift for them. I thought they would be ones that would love the mason jars as much as I do, and I decided that I would make them each a mason jar drinking glass set, using the very box that they came in!!!  SO fun!!! This is an incredibly easy gift to put together, and it turns out SO SO cute! It will be a hit with whomever you give it to, whether it's for a wedding, housewarming, birthday, Christmas...anytime!  It's also very cost-effective--I made each set for less than $10!!!  Even though you can buy special mason jars, … [Read more...]
