Because I love you so much, I’m going to share one of the YUMMIEST soup recipes you will ever make!  One of our family’s favorite traditions is “Friday Night Pizza”, and this past Friday I substituted our regular pizza for pizza soup. Did you know, I had not one complaint?  Just an empty crockpot, second and third bowls gobbled up by EVERY child, and a request to have it again next Friday night!  THAT’S how good it is.

This soup is chock full of flavor, packed with veggies, and contains the traditional pizza favorites like pepperoni and sausage.  Even better? It’s made in the crockpot, doesn’t take long to throw together, and fills your house with the most delicious aroma.  This is one soup you need to try…tonight!!!

I found the original recipe on the blog A Year of Slow Cooking, but I made just a couple of changes, which are reflected in the recipe below. I can’t wait for you make this…you are going to love it! Enjoy!

Serves: 6-8
  • 1 jar (14 oz.) pizza sauce
  • 3 empty jars full of water
  • 1 red bell pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, seeded and chopped
  • ½ red onion, chopped
  • 1 c. sliced mushrooms
  • 1 small can diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 ring turkey sausage, sliced and cut into quarters
  • 1 c. sliced pepperoni, sliced in quarters
  • 8 fresh basil leaves, chopped (or ½ T dried)
  • 1 T. dried oregano
  • 1½ c. dried pasta
  • shredded mozzarella cheese or fresh parmesan (for topping)
  1. Wash and prepare veggies, and add them to the crockpot. Cut up the sausage and pepperoni, and add to the veggies. Add basil and oregano. Pour in the pizza sauce, and follow with three empty jars of water.
  2. Cover and cook on low for 7-9 hours. Since everything is already cooked, it’s basically heating through, and letting all the flavors culminate. If you’re in a hurry, you can serve this in as little as 4-5 hours.
  3. Thirty minutes before serving, add the dry pasta, and turn to high. The original recipe called for ½ c. pasta, but we found that wasn’t enough for us. After a few tries, we decided on 1 ½ c. of pasta. This is definitely something you can experiment with as well!
  4. Garnish/top with shredded mozzarella cheese, or freshly grated parmesan cheese.
Serve with garlic bread!

    1. Yes, the sausage was already cooked. I use the turkey sausage ring, by Jennie-O, or similar brand. I think you could use another kind of sausage, but you would need to cook it first.

We made this tonight for dinner and had to make a few adjustments based on our tastes and what we had on hand, that I almost don’t want to comment…left out the mushrooms, used more pasta and water, used only 1 bell pepper, no sausage and all pepperoni, didn’t drain the tomatoes, bumped up the herbs a bit and added thyme. See?? However, it was SO good we will definitely be making this again.

  2. Lol, Jennifer!! I’m glad you commented, because it shows you can make changes to this recipe based on your tastes, and it’s still yummy! We also leave out the mushrooms (yuck–but I wanted to leave it in the recipe in case other people like it!), add more pasta, and a couple other things, and it’s a little bit different every time. It’s still fabulous no matter what, and I’m so glad you guys loved it too!!!!

    Howdy from snowy UT. We tried this soup tonight. I thought it was really good, but my picky eater (of course) didn’t like the tomatoes although she loved the sausage. We also made a few tweeks. I didn’t have that much pepperoni so I used what I had. I liked the mushrooms but my picky eater wouldn’t touch them. Anyway, thanks for the yummy recipe. – Wendy

      I have a picky eater who doesn’t like tomatoes either, and you can always blend them up in the blender first, so you have a smoother soup. I also always leave the mushrooms out—I don’t like them. :) I just left them in the original recipe because some people do! That’s the best part about this recipe–you can really adapt it to your family’s preferences. Glad you loved it! Try and keep warm! XO

    1. I never have, so I can’t say for sure how it would turn out. However, I think it would be worth a try! I don’t think it would ruin it, it just might not have as strong of a flavor. You’ll have to let me know if you do, and how you like it!!
