My kids and I love spending time together in the kitchen, and it’s especially fun during a holiday season, when we’re making fun and yummy treats to celebrate.  One of our very favorite recipes to make is Kelloggs® Rice Krispies® treats. They’re simple to whip up, take just a few ingredients, and are so yummy!

We’ve been getting in the Halloween mood at our house, we spent an afternoon making these totally adorable Kelloggs® Rice Krispies® Treats Halloween Pops and had a blast! We made the treats together, then the kids rolled them into balls, added the sticks, and decorated them like ghosts and black cats.  We had SO much fun!

Aren’t they adorable?  The kids loved decorating them just like they wanted to–adding ears, noses, and whiskers–and then eating them, of course. They couldn’t wait until their treats were ready to munch! Because Kelloggs® Rice Krispies® treats are so quick and easy, even with the decorating they didn’t have to wait long.

Making them lollipop-style (I used paper straws) means little hands have something to hold onto, and let’s face it, anything on a stick is super cute! These are perfect to make with your kids to eat at home, or even to take to friends, family, or Halloween parties.  We like to go “boo’ing” during the month of October, and these would be really fun for that too.

Want to find out how easy these are to make? I’m going to give you the scoop on how we did it!

INGREDIENTS:

-6 c.Kelloggs® Rice Krispies®

-4 c. mini marshmallows

-3 T. butter

-lollipop sticks or paper straws

-chocolate melts:  white and black

-candy eyes

-candy corn

-mini chocolate-covered soft mints

-licorice whips or licorice strips

DIRECTIONS:

Make the Kelloggs® Rice Krispies® treats, according to box directions. ( I listed the ingredients and measured above from that recipe.)  Let them cool in the pan for about 10 minutes or so–so they’re still soft and pliable, but not warm.

Once they’ve cooled slightly, roll them into balls–about 2-3 inches wide.  Don’t make them too big, or they might not stay together when you insert the stick.  Let them cool another 5 minutes before inserting a stick or straw into each ball. Lay them out on a cookie sheet that’s been covered with aluminum foil or wax paper.

Melt the chocolate according to package directions, then use a spoon to coat the balls with chocolate.  Don’t worry about getting it super smooth–Kelloggs® Rice Krispies® treats are naturally a little bumpy.

Decorate right away, before the chocolate hardens!

CAT: mini chocolate covered soft mints cut into quarters for the ears, candy corn for the nose, licorice cut into strips for the whiskers, and candy eyes for the eyes.

GHOST:  We used the black gel that comes in a tube, but you could also some of the black chocolate melt from the black cat, or even chocolate chips for the eyes.

OTHER IDEAS:  pumpkin (orange chocolate, green gumdrop for stem), mummy (candy eyes, white chocolate drizzled back and forth for mummy layers)

TIPS:

  1. Remember to let the treats cool before rolling them into balls, then again before inserting the sticks.  If it’s too warm, they will fall apart.
  2. Insert the candy corn cat noses before you cover the ball in chocolate!  We learned that it’s easier to push the nose in when it’s not covered in chocolate, and you don’t ruin it in the process.
  3. You don’t need a lot of chocolate, and too much will weigh them down.  You really just need enough to cover it, then shake off any excess.
  4. Let the kids do the decorating!  The ears might be a little crooked, and the noses might be off-center, but this is the part that lets them be creative and totally hands on.

That’s it! Now you’ve got the most adorable Kelloggs® Rice Krispies® Treats Halloween Pops!
