I’ve served these a couple of different ways, and both are divine. Cinnamon & sugar is a personal favorite, and it turns them into a fun treat. Serve with vanilla ice cream and it tastes like fried ice cream! I also love sprinkling them with salt, and a bit of Mexican seasoning, then dipping in salsa or pico de gallo. Serve them for a yummy Valentine’s Day treat or appetizer, and your family and friends will love them. Best of all, they’re easy to make, and a perfect Valentine’s Day food.

How to make tortilla chips in a heart?

All you need is a heart cookie cutter! I like having a few different sizes, but one is all you need. It really just depends on how big or small you want them to be. If you plan to dip in salsa, a slightly bigger chip works well–around 3 inches or so. If you’re rolling them in cinnamon & sugar, they can really be any size.

How to make homemade heart shaped tortilla chips

First, let’s talk tortillas. Tortilla chips are made from corn tortillas, so that’s what I’ll typically use if I plan to them in salsa. However, I have a few kids (and husband) who love flour tortillas best, so I often add in a few of those too. They’re both yummy! I also use both kinds when I roll them in cinnamon & sugar. Different people have varying preferences at our house, and it’s just as easy to do both, so that’s what I do. Either way, they’re yummy!

You can also choose whether to bake or fry them. I almost always use my cast-iron skillet to fry them because that’s what my kids prefer–and I think they taste the best! But if I’m feeling extra healthy, they’ll go in the oven.

Homemade Heart Tortilla Chips

Oven Method:

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or foil. After cutting tortillas into heart shapes, lay them out on the cookie sheet. Brush or spray with olive oil or avocado oil. Sprinkle with either salt or with cinnamon & sugar, depending on which type you’re making. Bake in an oven preheated to 375 degrees for about 11-13 minutes, or until the chips are a light golden brown.

Fry Method:

Pour enough oil into a medium fry pan or cast-iron skillet to fill it to a depth of about 1/8-1/4 of an inch. I’ll use less oil if I’m not planning to make as many chips, and a bit more if I’m making a bunch. Heat the oil on medium-high heat to about 350 degrees (an infrared thermometer is great for this!). You can test it by placing a small tortilla in the oil–if it starts to sizzle, you know it’s about right. If it sinks in the oil, it’s not hot enough, and if it browns very quickly, you know it’s too hot.

Using tongs, place the heart-shaped tortillas into the oil, turning them over once as each side browns. Remove from the oil when both sides are golden brown. For the savory option, place on a plate covered with a paper towel for draining excess oil, and immediately add a sprinkle of salt. The other option is to make a batch of cinnamon & sugar in a shallow pie plate, and immediately roll the hot chips in the mixture.

They’re best served warm, but can be placed in an airtight container for munching on later.
