homemade ice cream | simplykierste.com

One thing that screams summer at our house is homemade ice cream. (Get it?  I scream?? Haha!)  We love it, and make it ALL the time. It's also been a 4th of July tradition as long as I can remember--in my home growing up, and now in my own family. Wherever we are on the 4th, we make homemade ice cream--it wouldn't be the same without it! Photo: Country Living I make a vanilla base, and then add in from there. Our favorites include blackberry, lemon, raspberry, peach, Snickers, Reeses PB cups, brownie, and mint. It's incredibly easy, and ice cream makers can be purchased quite inexpensively (under $30) at a number of large retail stores. The one I have now came from Walmart, … [Read more...]

popcorn lollipops | simplykierste.com

Popcorn lollipops are one of my kids' favorite treats, and they're perfect for summertime, and for the 4th of July! They are super kid-friendly, fast and easy to make, and look darling!  Serve these at your 4th of July BBQ, and they will be a sure-fire hit!My favorite way to make popcorn balls is with marshmallows--the same way you make Rice Krispie treats, but with popcorn.  Melt the butter, add the marshmallows, and heat over a medium high heat, stirring constantly, until it's nice and smooth.  Pour it over the popcorn, stir with a wooden spoon until all the popcorn is covered.  I let it rest for a few minutes, to let the marshmallow cool and harden a little, which makes it … [Read more...]

s'mores | simplykierste.com

We are a campfire family...in fact, a fire pit was one of the very first things we built when we moved in to our new house last summer. And where there is a campfire, there are s'mores!  We have had them lots of different ways, but the good old fashioned s'more is still our favorite.  We're having a BBQ tonight with friends...an early Memorial Day celebration, and guess what's on the menu??!! Sometimes you just want a fun and simple way to make something extra special for a party or gathering, and that's what I was feeling today with the s'mores.  I also wanted to make it easier for everyone (and myself) when it came time to putting them together--and lessen the impatience of my … [Read more...]

burlap flag pillow | simplykierste.com

With Memorial Day the end of May, then Flag Day on June 14th, and the 4th of July,  flag & patriotic decor can be up for awhile, which I LOVE.  Independence Day has long been my favorite holiday (next to Christmas ☺), and I get so excited when I can start decorating.  I made this darling burlap flag pillow for my front entry bench, and it's perfect!  It's really easy to make, and I used the same method as my burlap flag bunting.  I already had a burlap pillow cover that's been sitting in my closet, but I would have made one otherwise. I actually need to make a couple for my boys' beds, so hopefully I'll be able to post a tutorial on those soon. In addition to the pillow cover, all … [Read more...]

berry trifle in a jar brown paper packages title

Fresh berries are one of my absolute favorite things, and the epitome of summer. I think I adore blackberries the most, but I waver whenever I taste raspberries!   I love to serve berries after dinner, and mason jars is a really fun way to present them. When I'm feeling extra fancy, I make them into a trifle, using a quick and simple lemon cream.  It takes just minutes to make, but adds an incredible creaminess and a sweet complement to the tartness of the berries.  If you're looking for a yummy dessert to serve to family, friends, or other company, this is definitely one to try! This time I used raspberries and blueberries for the 4th of July, but any berry will work.  You could … [Read more...]

flag tee brown paper packages 1

I wanted to make a fun tee for my girls to wear on the 4th of July, and I needed it to be quick and simple.  I just had a couple more days before my sewing machine would be packed away, and I didn't have a lot of time to work on it.  So, I grabbed two spools of ribbon, some thread, and grey tee shirts I found at Walmart for $3.  Less than 30 minutes later, I had two darling shirts, ready to celebrate in! Okay, no judging here.  Lol.  I am by no means a seamstress, and I know that there are plenty of you out there that are.  So, please don't look too close at my stitches---I'm just happy that they look pretty straight! Just know that if I can do this, you can … [Read more...]

flag bunting | simplykierste.com

Happy {Flag} Day!   This darling stars & stripes bunting is the perfect project to celebrate today, as well as the 4th of July.  It's super easy to do, and you can get it done in less than two hours--and that's mostly drying time! It would be so cute in a doorway, window, on a mantel or backyard fence, or as decoration behind your holiday table.   I used the darker idaho potato colored burlap, and I {love} it.  The paint colors are Rustoleum's Navy Blue (Gloss) and Colonial Red (Satin). I really recommend that you use spray paint, as opposed to craft paint. Craft paint will soak through the burlap, saturating it much more than the lightness of spray paint. It also … [Read more...]
