5 tips for painting & decorating unfinished frames

5 tips for painting & decorating unfinished frames | simplykierste.com

Hello again... Jes here from Mommy Envy. Pinterest is full of cute printables inside cute frames. I love using these MDF frames with fancy edges because they are customizable and it's easy to change out the picture. I love decorating with pictures of my family and since we have young kids I am constantly putting new pictures in. First of all you can get these unfinished frames at most craft stores. I ordered a bunch from Cut it Out Frames and then let them sit in a drawer for almost a year! There's no need to be afraid to paint these frames. It's so easy! There's no sanding or priming required. The first set of frames I painted were for my youngest's nursery. My mom made the cutest … ...read more

An easy way to create circular text in Photoshop Elements

An easy way to create circular text in Photoshop Elements | simplykierste.com

I love making cute customized tags and stickers for different projects and gifts, and I've used Photoshop Elements (referred to as PSE from here on out) for many years to do just that. It's also a great photo editor, but even though I use different software for editing photos, I still love PSE for creating printables.  It's a pretty reasonable cost (affiliate link--you can download it on Amazon for $69), and there is just so much you can do with it! I love it, and use it often. I think it's one of the best values you can get for your money! One of favorite things to do is to create circular text around the outside of my tag or sticker. I think it's SO cute!  It looks hard, but it really … ...read more

How to plank a piano & a chalk paint piano makeover | simplykierste.com

So, I planked my piano.  YES, I did! I have been wanting to paint my piano for a very long time.  Years, in fact.  I don't know why I've hesitated, because normally I paint anything and everything I can get my hands on. I think a lot of it is due to the fact that the last couple of years we have been moving around a lot--three states in a two and a half years--and now that our new house will be finished in a few months, our temporary living situation will cease. Hallelujah! I haven't been able to really do any projects or decorating for years, and I'm more than ready to start digging into my mile-long list so they'll be ready when we move in. Project #1?  The piano.  It's one of the few … ...read more

12 yummy breakfast ideas for overnight guests | simplykierste.com

We moved away from our family and home state when we left for graduate school, and since then we've lived in four different states and gathered dear friends in every place we've been.  We love LOVE when we have guests, and when our friends and family come to visit.  It's always so wonderful to get to spend time with them, and show them "our town".  I seriously can't wait for our house to be finished, so we can start having guests again! We are pretty casual when it comes to breakfast, and even when guests come, we mostly stick to hot/cold cereal, fruit, yogurt, and juice.  It's always fun serving an extra yummy breakfast during the visit, and we'll save it for a morning when we have … ...read more

Painted Flag Window | simplykierste.com

I've been in withdrawals over the last year. Since we moved to New York, all of our things have been in storage while we build our house, including my collection of old windows.  I haven't ad a chance to go looking for more, so when a friend very kindly gave me a few of hers, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with one of them.  Making  a painted flag window has been on my list forever, and I want to use it not only for holiday decor, but on a regular basis in my home.  Not sure where yet...but somewhere!  It was super easy to do, and I LOVE it! Pottery Barn inspired vintage lamp

Pottery Barn inspired vintage lamp tutorial | simplykierste.com

So excited to have Amanda from The Tale of an Ugly House here today, sharing this ADORABLE Pottery Barn inspired vintage lamp! My husband and I have recently been transitioning our son's room from a nursery to more of a big boy room. My son, Charlie has been over the moon to see all the new things coming into his room. One item that I just couldn't settle on was a lamp. I wasn't finding exactly what I was looking for when I went to the big box store. While flipping though a Pottery Barn Kids magazine one morning, I saw this adorable vintage truck lamp. Given that Charlie loves cars and trucks, it was perfect! The price however was not. $130 for a lamp for a two-year old was a bit much … ...read more

Cheap & easy DIY outdoor wooden blocks

Cheap & easy DIY outdoor wooden blocks | simplykierste.com

My husband and I are outside quite a bit building and working on different projects now that the weather is nice, and it's wonderful!   The kids will play outside in the yard while we're working, and one of the things they love to play with are all the wood scraps that we seem to have an endless supply of.  This past Saturday they were stacking the scraps, building towers, making roads, pretending all sorts of things, and even coloring them with their sidewalk chalk.  It kept them busy for a long time, and they were having a ball.  I decided to use all of our scrap wood and make them their own permanent set of outdoor wooden blocks to keep outside all the time, knowing they would be a huge … ...read more
