Chocolate Dipped Candy Canes

Make these yummy and easy chocolate dipped candy canes in no time! Perfect for gift giving, and enjoying with your hot chocolate throughout the holidays.

Chocolate chipped candy canes are incredibly easy to make–really in just seconds! But they look so fancy, and they’re perfect for gift-giving, hot chocolate bars, and just because it’s the holiday. Just two ingredients is all you need!

Aren’t they just so festive? You’ll impress everyone you serve them to. I host a hot chocolate party every year, and these are such a fun addition. If you like the combination of peppermint and chocolate, you’ll love these, especially when stirring your hot chocolate.

If you’re looking for something extra special for a holiday party, or to have with your family and friends on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, these chocolate dipped candy canes are perfect. I have the best crockpot hot chocolate recipe (you can make it on the stovetop too), and these make the perfect stir sticks to serve on the side!

They also make really cute holiday and Christmas neighbor gifts! Wrap up a set of candy canes–I like to use a cellophane bag tied with a ribbon–for friends, neighbors, hairstylists, teachers, and more. You can give it with a favorite hot chocolate mix or recipe too!

Ingredients

Just two ingredients are on the list…

  • Candy canes
  • Chocolate chips or melting chocolate

For the peppermint sprinkles on top, you can either crush additional candy canes, or buy them already packaged. I’ve done both, but if I find some in a bag at the grocery store for a good price I always grab them up.

I’ve also drizzled white chocolate on top, before the peppermint, and sometimes all by itself. It’s really yummy too, and adds even more of a flair. It’s fun to make a few of both if you’re wrapping them up to give away as a gift.

How to make

The best part is how super easy they are to make! My kids helped me with a batch this weekend, and we can’t wait to have them with our hot chocolate. What I also love is that you can make as few or as many as you like, and it’s easy to alter the quantity. Whether you’re making a really big batch to give away, or just a few for your family, it’s not hard to switch things up to accommodate numbers.

How to Make Chocolate Dipped Candy Canes

Start by unwrapping candy canes (as many as you need) and laying them out on a sheet of wax paper or parchment paper.

Prepare any toppings ahead of time. I like to put everything in small bowls or ramekins and laying them out so they’re ready to go. If you need to crush candy canes, do that first.

Melt the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl for 30 seconds, then in 10-second intervals, stirring in between. This is an important step! They may not look completely melted, because they retain their form, and it’s easy think they’re not melted yet. But when stirring, you’ll see when they come together smoothly. For 6 candy canes, start with 1/2-3/4 cup of chocolate chips or melting wafers. You may need to add more–it really just depends on how much chocolate you use when dipping, and that can vary. Also melt any white chocolate you may be using as well.

TIP: Only melt what you think you’ll need within 5-10 minutes, otherwise the chocolate will start to harden as you’re trying to dip. It’s easy to melt the chocolate as you need it, rather than one huge batch.

Some like to add oil to the chocolate chips (not melting wafers) so the chocolate won’t harden as quickly. I don’t use this method, because it makes the chocolate pretty soft, and takes longer for it to harden when they’re finished.

Dip each candy cane hook into the chocolate, using a spoon to make sure it gets covered front and back. Place on wax paper, and immediately sprinkle the crushed candy canes on top. If you’re doing a white chocolate drizzle, do that before the crushed candy canes. Let them sit for an hour or so until hardened. Keep them in an airtight container until ready to serve.

FAQ

Does it matter if you use milk chocolate or dark chocolate?

Not at all–that is totally a personal preference.
