Farmhouse Style Office Makeover on a Budget

As a part of the Better Homes & Gardens influencer network, I do a monthly design project that I feature here.  This month I was thrilled to be able to design a space for a domestic abuse shelter.  It quickly became my favorite project to date, and I’m absolutely delighted to tell you about this Farmhouse Style Office Makeover!

A huge thanks to Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart for sponsoring this post.  As always, all opinions are 100% mine.

FARMHOUSE STYLE OFFICE MAKEOVER

I gave the shelter the option to choose the space that they needed most for the makeover, and they decided on the residents’ computer room.

I was so excited to get started, and could immediately envision what I wanted to do. Here’s how it looked before I got started:

WHITE PAINT + WHITE CURTAINS = LIGHT & BRIGHT!

My first goal was to brighten the room, and make it more light and airy. Crisp white paint accomplished that goal, and also made the room seem bigger and more open.  The room is small, but has a good-sized window, letting in a lot of natural light, which I loved, and worked really well with the white paint.

I didn’t want to lose any light into the room, so I chose a sheer white curtain for the window, and a darker curtain rod for contrast.  It all works so well together, and it’s definitely more light + bright!

NEUTRAL RUG TRANSFORMS THE ROOM

I was thrilled to find the perfect rug–it is just the right thing to tie in all the aspects of the room, and really brings everything together. It’s a neutral rug with a beautiful design, and it’s also a lighter color, which also helps to open up the space. I fell in love with it when I saw it, and it’s exactly what I was looking for.

STYLISH & FUNCTIONAL STORAGE

One of the requests from the shelter was some much needed storage space.  The residents bring their children into this room with them, so having a place for toys, coloring books and crayons, and other similar items was high on the list.  These super cute baskets are not only stylish, but really functional–and they’ll be perfect for not only the toys, but also any office supplies that need to be stored in this room. The white storage cubes by Better Homes & Gardens + coordinating fabric bins and wire baskets were the perfect choice—tons of storage, and it looks amazing!

For an additional touch of farmhouse style, I made the chalkboard above it, and hung a boxwood wreath with a burlap ribbon on top.

FARMHOUSE STYLE DIY DESK

I really wanted to build a desk to go in this room to serve as a focal piece, and I’m so happy with how it turned out.  The stained top, crisp white on the bottom, and “x”s on the sides all give it that farmhouse style, and adds so much charm to the room.  We built it to fit the space–it’s not too big, but is big enough to easily hold the computer, CPU, and keyboard, plus have room for residents to have desk space if needed.

A tufted dining chair is the office chair, and it’s perfection.  It adds a touch of elegance, but works well with the farmhouse style design.  The hand sewn buttons and decorative stitching are my favorite…it’s all in the details!

I added my favorite task lamp and a little green plant for a pop of color–it’s simple, but effective.  The “OFFICE” sign I made to hang over the desk is perfect for that wall.

I LOVE the completed space, and I’m just so happy that I was able to transform this space for them.  One of the residents came by as I was finishing up and said “This is beautiful!  I feel like I’m in a fancy suite!”.  That’s the highest praise of all…and seeing her face brighten was the absolute best thing I could have ever hoped for.

A HUGE thank you to the shelter, and all the people there that made this a success. It definitely was a team effort, and I couldn’t have done it without help from their incredible staff. They were nothing but welcoming and helpful, and it was such a joy to work with every single person I met.  It was truly my pleasure to be able to do this, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity.

Domestic abuse and violence is very real and it does not discriminate. “Anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender can be a victim – or perpetrator – of domestic violence. It can happen to people who are married, living together or who are dating. It affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels.” (thehotline.org)
