Last Christmas I decided that I needed something more for my front porch, and I thought that a really tall wood sign would be just the thing. I love how it turned out, and this MERRY Christmas wood sign is the perfect addition for my outdoor holiday decor!
Our house is pretty far back from the road, but you can still see the sign from there, and I love that! It’s 6 feet tall, plus the wood frame, and I absolutely love it next to my front door. I usually like to keep it pretty simple, and I think this is just the right touch.

Best of all, it’s an easy project that takes a couple of hours…plus drying time. I cut the vinyl out on my Silhouette Cameo, and then used the negative space as a stencil. (You can download the cut file below if you like!)
If you don’t have a vinyl cutter, you can also do it by hand: design the text on your computer in Word (the exact size you want it to be), then print. You’ll probably need several pages to fit all of your text. Lay the paper out on your board, with the letters where you want them to be. Use a pencil to trace around each letter, pressing firmly. When you lift up your paper, there will be an indentation of the letter, and you can fill it in with paint.
MERRY Christmas Wood Sign
SUPPLIES:
-1×6 board (I used regular pine–I like the imperfections. If you want smooth, then use select pine.)
-white latex paint
-stain (I used Minwax Provincial)
-1×2 furring strips, enough to go all the way around your sign
-chop saw / compound miter saw
-stencil
-red craft or latex paint
-1 1/4 inch nails
-hammer
DIRECTIONS:
I used a 6 foot pine board, but you can also use MDF and cut it to size if you prefer. For the white paint, I used leftover house paint. For a sign of this size, it’s really too big to use craft paint, so I recommend latex paint or spray paint. The letters could be painted on with craft paint or latex paint–whatever you’ve got!
-Paint the board white, let dry.
-Apply the vinyl stencil, then paint on with red paint and let dry.
-Sand the board as desired. I like a distressed look, so I always do quite a bit of sanding!
-Stain the furring strips and let dry.
-Cut the furring strips to size (to fit around your board), and attach to your wood board with wood glue and nails.
