Make these darling Paint Can Trick-or-Treat buckets in no time! Simple, inexpensive, and perfect for Halloween candy!

Paint Can Trick-or-Treat Buckets

Remember how I told you everything we have (minus the basics) is in storage?  That means all of our Halloween stuff, including the trick-or-treat buckets.  The kids were pretty concerned about what they would put all of their candy in, so, it was time to make new ones!  I was going to use pails–because I’m seriously obsessed with them, and use them for everything–but when I was in the paint aisle at Home Depot and saw the paint cans, I thought they would be perfect, and so fun!

I absolutely love how they turned out, and so do my kids.  Maybe a little too much, because I’ve now had to hide them until it’s time to use them!

You all know that I love simple and quick projects, and this one is no exception.  I was able to make all five of them in about 30 minutes!  They were also cost effective–the paint cans were around $5 at Home Depot, and then a small bit of vinyl that I already had on hand.  A super cute trick-or-treat bucket for around $5?  I’ll take it!

SUPPLIES

  • new paint cans
  • -vinyl text (I used my Silhouette Cameo)
  • -ribbon/fabric

DIRECTIONS

This was literally a two-step process!  I used my Silhouette to cut out  1 inch dots for the polka dots (to fill a whole page, make one dot, click on it, go to object-replicate-fill page), each of my kids’ names, plus bats for the boys, and spiders for the girls that I found in the Silhouette online store. I eye-balled the polka dot placement, and added the names in the center of the cans.

To make the stripes on the boys’ buckets, I used my paper trimmer to cut .5 x 12 inch strips of vinyl, two per stripe, and four per bucket. I needed two per stripe, because one wouldn’t fit all the way around the bucket.  I just overlapped them a tiny bit, and since they were the same size, they matched up exactly.

I had to add a little ribbon, but only to the girls’ buckets.  :) You could also use strips of fabric!

If you don’t have a Silhouette or other vinyl cutter, you could look for alphabet stickers and other scrapbook embellishments that have adhesive on them to make it easy.

Here’s to no tricks and lots of treats!!  :)

  3. These are so cute! I’d like to try to make some this Halloween for my 2 year old and his friends. I’m not much of a crafty person, so I apologize if this question has an obvious answer…but I was wondering how you adhered the vinyl to the paint can? Did you also cut the names out of the vinyl? Thanks for your help and advice! :)

    1. Hi Betsy,

I did cut the names out of vinyl-I have a Silhouette Cameo that I cut it out on. If you don’t have one, you can order vinyl names online. The company I worked with for a long time (before I had my own vinyl cutter) is http://writings-onthewall.com. Call and speak with Becky, and tell her what you want, and she will get it for you! A name should be very reasonably priced. There are also a bunch of etsy shops that sell custom vinyl–just do a quick search, and it should come up with a bunch. Anyone you order from will give you instructions on how to apply it. It’s not hard, but you’ll want to have it explained before you try it.

If you didn’t want to order vinyl, you could always look for large alphabet stickers at Michael’s, JoAnn Fabrics, or Hobby Lobby–they might have something that would work!

If you have any other questions, please let me know!!! xoxo
