Paper Sack Mother’s Day Card: a Child’s Q&A

At my church, I get to work with the Primary children (kids aged 3-11), and I LOVE it. Mother’s Day is just a few short weeks away, and this week I designed a super fun card that I think all their moms are going to love! I wanted to make a card where they could each express some favorite things about their mom.  I was talking to one of my best friends this week, and she reminded me of an idea that I have actually loved for a long time…in fact, my oldest son wrote a card like it for me when he was in preschool, and it’s one of my most treasured possessions.  Asking a child questions about their mom–some funny, others serious–and putting it all together in a cute package was just what I was looking for! .

I really love paper sacks, and I knew it would be the perfect way to present this card.  They’re really inexpensive, which when you’re making over 100 cards, is an important aspect. Even if you don’t need cheap, they’re just adorable, best of all, they’re easy to make for one mom or 100+!

The inside of the card contains a fun q&a that the kids will fill out about their moms, and it is so fun and sweet to see their perspective–what they love best, and why. It’s really like freezing a moment in time forever, because you will always be able to look back and see what they were thinking at that age.  Some of the questions will evoke from little kids the funniest answers, such as “how old is your mom?”, “what year was she born?”, and “how does your mom spend most of her day?”.  According to my son when he was preschool, I was 82 and spent all day talking on the telephone.  ☺

{A Child’s Q&A: Sample Questions}

These are just a few examples of questions that can be asked. (The first few work best for small children.) My super creative friend sent me these questions, and I love them! There are so many more options, and you can get even more specific if you like, asking about favorite songs, books, memories, etc.

What is your mom’s name?

How old is your mom?

What year was she born?

What’s your favorite thing she cooks?

How does your mom spend most of her day?

If your mom was a superhero, what would her name be?

If your mom was a superhero, what would her ability be?

My mom is the best at…

The thing I hear my mom say the most is…

My favorite thing to do with my mom is…

I know my mom loves me because…

I love my mom because…

My mom always smiles when…

My mom is happiest when…

Each child can also draw a special picture or write a note and tuck it into “top secret” compartment, which they LOVE, and one of my favorite parts of this paper sack card!

How fun is that??!!  It’s all tied up in the end, so it’s for mom’s eyes only!!

{directions}

***downloads for questions and front tag are at the bottom of the post!***

1.  Fold your paper sacks in half, with the bottom of the lunch sack on the inside right.

2.  Print questions out onto white cardstock. I designed mine to fit 4 to a page, so you’ll need to cut them apart using a paper trimmer. Use double stick tape or other adhesive to adhere the questions to the inside of the card–onto what was the bottom of the lunch sack.

3.  Print out text for the front of the card onto white or cream cardstock ( download my tags HERE), and punch them out with a 2 inch circle punch. I distressed the edges with Distress Ink.

4.  Cut out scallop circles from colored cardstock or scrapbook paper–mine are 2.7 inches, and I used my Silhouette to cut them out.  If you don’t have a Silhouette, you can also use a scallop circle punch, like THIS, available at craft stores or online.  It’s a great investment—they are perfect for tags, and a ton of other stuff! Adhere the circles with the text to the scallops, then onto to the front of the paper sack card. These are all my scallops…ready to go!

5.  Punch a hole in the side of the card, through both the bottom and top of the card, then use a piece of jute or baker’s twine to tie it shut when you’re ready to send!
