Paper Sack Mother’s Day Card: a Child’s Q&A

At my church, I get to work with the Primary children (kids aged 3-11), and I LOVE it. Mother’s Day is just a few short weeks away, and this week I designed a super fun card that I think all their moms are going to love! I wanted to make a card where they could each express some favorite things about their mom.  I was talking to one of my best friends this week, and she reminded me of an idea that I have actually loved for a long time…in fact, my oldest son wrote a card like it for me when he was in preschool, and it’s one of my most treasured possessions.  Asking a child questions about their mom–some funny, others serious–and putting it all together in a cute package was just what I was looking for! .

I really love paper sacks, and I knew it would be the perfect way to present this card.  They’re really inexpensive, which when you’re making over 100 cards, is an important aspect. Even if you don’t need cheap, they’re just adorable, best of all, they’re easy to make for one mom or 100+!

The inside of the card contains a fun q&a that the kids will fill out about their moms, and it is so fun and sweet to see their perspective–what they love best, and why. It’s really like freezing a moment in time forever, because you will always be able to look back and see what they were thinking at that age.  Some of the questions will evoke from little kids the funniest answers, such as “how old is your mom?”, “what year was she born?”, and “how does your mom spend most of her day?”.  According to my son when he was preschool, I was 82 and spent all day talking on the telephone.  ☺

{A Child’s Q&A: Sample Questions}

These are just a few examples of questions that can be asked. (The first few work best for small children.) My super creative friend sent me these questions, and I love them! There are so many more options, and you can get even more specific if you like, asking about favorite songs, books, memories, etc.

What is your mom’s name?

How old is your mom?

What year was she born?

What’s your favorite thing she cooks?

How does your mom spend most of her day?

If your mom was a superhero, what would her name be?

If your mom was a superhero, what would her ability be?

My mom is the best at…

The thing I hear my mom say the most is…

My favorite thing to do with my mom is…

I know my mom loves me because…

I love my mom because…

My mom always smiles when…

My mom is happiest when…

Each child can also draw a special picture or write a note and tuck it into “top secret” compartment, which they LOVE, and one of my favorite parts of this paper sack card!

How fun is that??!!  It’s all tied up in the end, so it’s for mom’s eyes only!!

{directions}

***downloads for questions and front tag are at the bottom of the post!***

1.  Fold your paper sacks in half, with the bottom of the lunch sack on the inside right.

2.  Print questions out onto white cardstock. I designed mine to fit 4 to a page, so you’ll need to cut them apart using a paper trimmer. Use double stick tape or other adhesive to adhere the questions to the inside of the card–onto what was the bottom of the lunch sack.

3.  Print out text for the front of the card onto white or cream cardstock ( download my tags HERE), and punch them out with a 2 inch circle punch. I distressed the edges with Distress Ink.

4.  Cut out scallop circles from colored cardstock or scrapbook paper–mine are 2.7 inches, and I used my Silhouette to cut them out.  If you don’t have a Silhouette, you can also use a scallop circle punch, like THIS, available at craft stores or online.  It’s a great investment—they are perfect for tags, and a ton of other stuff! Adhere the circles with the text to the scallops, then onto to the front of the paper sack card. These are all my scallops…ready to go!

5.  Punch a hole in the side of the card, through both the bottom and top of the card, then use a piece of jute or baker’s twine to tie it shut when you’re ready to send!

  1. What a wonderful idea! Thank you for including the grandma printable, I had been looking for something fun and unique to give my mom and MIL this year. This is perfect they will LOVE it.:)

  2. Love this! Great for the grandparents – I think I will include some of their artwork as well!

Do you by chance have a copy of the questionaire with “grandma” instead of mom? If not I can try to make one but thought I would ask =)

    Thanks!

    1. By popular request, I made a grandma question sheet, and it’s uploaded to the post!!! It’s always worth asking. :) xoxo

  3. Love this cute idea. I clicked on the junior questions for mom and it comes up blurred with nothing there. Can it be downloaded again?

    1. Hmmmm…I just tried it, and it worked for me. Will you try printing it, and see if it prints? If not, e-mail me and I’ll send you a copy. simplykierste@yahoo.com

  4. Could you possibly make a tag with MOM spelled MUM? I am Australian and we spell it differently? :)

  5. Thank you so much for this tutorial! I made 30 of these for my church’s Pre-K kids and I am so excited to see what they do with them! They are going to be great! Thank you again!

  6. Thanks so much for sharing such a cute (and easy) idea! I just did this with my Activity Day girls and they were really excited to do it. Thank you!

  7. This is absolutely wonderful! I’m always looking for easy, cheap, creative ideas. Just awesome!!!

  8. Love this craft idea!! Would you mind sending me a email with the questions for both young and older kids? They come up blurry when I click on them. Thanks so much for sharing this!

      1. When I click on both sets of questions, they come up blurry. I tried printing them off and it was just lines. Could you please email them to me. Thank you so much for your helpful ideas.

  9. This is such a great idea! I am going to pin it for future use! If you have questions about grandma to download I’d LOVE it. I know that might make me seem lazy but I’m not so great at these things. That is why I am sooooo appreciative!! Thank you!!

    1. when I try to print out the questions it prints out totally blurred too. I tried to save as a pdf and go from there and it is blurry. It is very strange because when I first click on it it is not blurry. If you could email me both(older & younger) questions I would be really appreciative. Thanks.

      1. They’ve been sent!!! So sorry–I can’t figure out the blurriness, but I’m working on it. :)

  10. Thank you so much for this! I noticed that if I save the pdf as “all files” instead of just a “preview”, it is no longer blurry. Because of your creative talent, but primary kids and my own kids will have something fun for their moms and grandmas!

    1. Thank you for the info! I couldn’t figure it out, because it looks just fine on my computer. I’m glad you shared, thank you!!!

  11. Will you send me a file too? I looked at this last week and it was fine but now it’s just lines. Thanks!

    1. I sent them!!! The grandma questions are uploaded to the post–are they looking blurry as well? Another reader mentioned that if you save as “all files” instead of “preview”, it doesn’t look blurry. It would be worth a shot!

  12. Oh, and can you send me the grandma questions too? I Love this idea…thanks for all your hard work and creativity!

  13. Love that you added grandma questions! Thank you! Maybe I’m a dork, but how do I get the labels for grandma and nana to print out the right size for the front? When I click on them they just open up big…? Thanks, love the idea, we are making them for my primary class, my prek class, and for our grandmas! I also think I”ll make one for my kids to give to me and have my hubby help my kids answer the questions!

    1. No, it’s a great question! You want them to open up big, because it will be the right resolution when you save it. Once it’s saved, open up Word, and select “insert”, then “picture”. You’ll be able to browse your files for the image, and once you select it, it will be in your document. All you need to do to re-size it, is to click on it, and drag the edges until it’s the size you want it to be. I size mine to be 2×2 inches, so I can cut it with my 2 inch circle punch. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!!

  14. Thank you so much for sharing, this is adorable, we are using it for primary this Sunday.
    Love your blog

  15. I LOVE this idea! So cute, and so simple =) I am having the same problem of the questions (both senior& junior) not printing correctly. I have tried to save it, and it looks great on my computer, but it just prints blurry lines. If you don’t mind emailing it to me, I would appreciate it!
    Thanks, Ashlee

  16. I have been wracking my brain trying to come up with something fun that my kids could do for their “Nanny’s”. Is there any way I could have you make a lable for N is for Nanny? If not, what is the font style and size. This is like a full time job for you, isn’t it? I sure appreciate sharing your talents. I’ve been following you for years!

  17. I love this! Could you tell me the name of the font you used for the “m” and “is for” so i can make my own? Thanks!

  18. I love this and would like to use it if that is ok? I am not able to get it to show up either! (The questions that is, for both Junior and Senior Primary.) I am grateful for creative people like you who share this stuff and take the time to do so to help the rest of us out:)

  19. Thank you so much for sharing this! My presidency had decided to make the question sheets but I couldn’t figure out a way to make them cute. :) I found you doing a search and am so excited to do these this Sunday. From all the moms in my ward a huge “Thank you!” in advance!!!

  21. These really are the greatest! Could you send me the Junior and Senior questions as well? Same blurry problem. :) Thanks for such a cute idea!

  22. Thank You so much for your awesome talent of CREATING and most of all…. SHARING!

  24. I made these adorable cards for my Primary. Super cute and the kids had a great time making them!

  25. These are so cute. I am going to help my nieces make them for their dad.
I am new to crafting & the Silhouette. I tried to cut out a design on construction paper thinking it would be the same as cardstock. Big mistake (the paper stuck to my cutting mat). I just want to make sure I won’t have the same problem if I use actual cardstock.
    Thanks for the help.

    1. So sorry!! You should be fine with cardstock, and things like patterned scrapbook paper.

  26. I love this! I am going to do this for my primary (about 75kids) and I would like to do one from my kids for grandparents. Do you have a G for Grandma button? Thank you so much for sharing your talent with all of us!

  27. Thank You! I think there is going to be a couple of classrooms of 3rd graders taking these home to their moms! I so appreciate your creativity and generosity!

  28. Can you provide the questions as a pdf instead of a word document? The formatting is getting messed up when I download it and I’m not sure how to fix it. If you can, that would be awesome! :)

  29. Just finished prepping these for our 4th-6th graders at church. LOVE this idea!! Can’t wait to hear their feedback. :)
    Thank you!!!

    1. Oh, you’ll have to tell me how it goes! I love that age–I’m sure they’ll have some fun answers. :)

  30. Thank you so much! Just what I was looking for for our primary on Sunday! This are so cute and easy and cheap.

  31. Thank-you for putting this together!! What a great idea for primary! I am also having the problem of blurry lines showing up when I open the question files. Would you be able to email me as well? I would greatly appreciate it :)

    1. They’ve been sent!!! Those blurry lines are making me CRAZY. It looks fine on my end, so I can’t figure out the problem.

  32. Hi Kierste,

I was wondering if you could email me the grandma questions too?
I get black lines also, I know its the day before mothers day but they are so cute. I thought I might take a chance that you may receive this in time
    thanks

  33. Thank you! And especially thank you for the grandma labels. We have kids in Primary who don’t have moms.

  34. Hello Kierste,
I am a few years late finding this cute idea for Mother’s Day, but I hope I could still get you to email it to me. M for mom. I would love to do this with my junior primary this week. It is so creative and simple, and simple is exactly what I need for Mother’s day.
Thank you so much for sharing your fun idea.

    1. Hi, Janice!

Everything you need is at the bottom of the post, under “DOWNLOAD”. You’ll need the M is for Mom tags, plus the older and younger questions if you’re doing it for Junior and Senior Primary. They are all PDF files, so just click on the link and print onto white card stock!

Let me know if you have any other questions!! xoxo
